Choosing the right home solar system

The right system depends on your roof space, how much power you use and when you use it, and whether you want a battery now or later. We visit or check your roof, look at your power bills, and then design a system that fits. Compare our solar packages to get a feel for the options.

What size solar system does your home need?

In Melbourne, each 1 kW of solar panels makes about 3.6 kWh of power a day on average across the year. That means:

  • 6.6 kW makes about 24 kWh a day. A good fit for many smaller and mid-size homes.
  • 10 kW makes about 36 kWh a day. Suits bigger families, pools or homes planning a battery or EV.
  • 13 kW and up suits large or all-electric homes.

Solar Choice’s July 2026 price index puts an average 6.6 kW system in Melbourne at about $6,555 and a 10 kW system at about $9,932, before the Solar Victoria rebate. See our solar panel cost guide.

Panels, inverters and batteries we trust

We only install brands we are happy to put our name on, with local warranty support:

  • Solar panels from AIKO and Trina Solar
  • Inverters from Sungrow, Fronius, Sigenergy and Enphase
  • Batteries including Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase, Sigenergy and Sungrow
  • Monitoring so you can see what your system makes and what your home uses

Solar panels let you make your own power during the day, so you buy less from the grid and your bills drop. Adding a battery lets you use that solar power at night too. Solar can also make your home more appealing to buyers and renters.

Most homes are installed in one day. Larger systems, batteries or switchboard upgrades can take a little longer. Grid connection and your new meter settings are arranged after the install.

Some older homes do. We check your switchboard during the quote and tell you upfront if it needs work, so there are no surprises on install day.

Tin, tile and flat roofs can all take solar. North-facing roofs are best, but east and west roofs still work well, especially if you use power in the morning or late afternoon. If you have shade from trees, microinverters or optimisers can help.

Yes. We can design your system to be battery-ready, so adding a battery later is simple. See our solar battery page.

Eligible homes can get up to $1,400 off from Solar Victoria, plus an optional interest-free loan. See our solar rebates guide.
